Key Ideas
Here are some important terms that will help you learn how to stay safe at work and at home. You can look over these terms before you go to the "Activity" step. You can also return to this list while you do the activity. - Ergonomics
- Exercises
- Technique
- Tension
ErgonomicsErgonomics is a science that explores how to arrange objects so that people can work safely. These objects can be desks, floors, chairs, computers, forklifts, cars, ladders, and other people. When you work, you put objects in different places. Sometimes, you can create dangerous situations. For example, you can - hold scissors pointing toward you
- leave boxes and other objects on the floor
- put a computer on a table that is too high
These kinds of situations lead to injuries and accidents. Ergonomics looks at how we can prevent these situations.
ExercisesAn exercise is an activity that you do many times. Exercises can have many different goals. Ergonomics tries to find exercises that will prevent injuries and accidents. For example, you can do exercises - to make your back stronger
- to put a stop to carpal tunnel syndrome
- to relax your eyes when they are tired
Exercises help stretch muscles and make them stronger. They train your body to sit, stand and move safely.
TechniqueA technique is a method or a way of doing something. Techniques help us do something correctly, safely, or quickly. Authors use techniques to help them write better. Scientists use techniques to make sure the results of their tests are true. In ergonomics, you learn techniques that will help you stay safe on the job. Here are some examples. - nurses learn how to handle blood safely
- builders learn what they need to do with asbestos
- plant workers learn how to work with chemicals that can cause fires
- movers learn how to pick up heavy boxes safely
All these techniques keep people out of danger.
TensionTension is stress or pressure. Muscle tension is stiffness or tightness in the muscle. When your muscles are tense, they can get hurt easily. You can pull or strain a tense muscle. It's much harder to hurt a muscle that is loose or relaxed. Ergonomics tries to find the best techniques to keep your body relaxed and healthy. These techniques include exercise, stretching, proper posture, and proper movement.

Activity
This activity has 3 tasks. - Visit a Web site to learn about safety techniques.
- Identify dangers at work.
- Make a list of safety measures.
Follow the directions in these 3 tasks and you'll discover how to stay safe at work. Task 1: Visit A Web site To Learn About Safety TechniquesMost people hurt themselves every year just by the way they move. Some people hold their hands incorrectly when they type. Some people slip on ice. Other people spill hot water and burn themselves. At the Work Safety Web site, you will learn a few tips that will keep you safe when you move around at work. Think about what kinds of dangers you face every day. Read the material and look at the illustrations. Task 2: Identify Dangers at WorkThere are many different kinds of dangers you face at work. There are some dangers you might think about all the time. If you work with a drill press or a welding machine, you know that you have to be careful. Often you need to wear special clothes at work to keep you safe. There are also dangers that we don't even think about. Dentists and their assistants bend over people all day. If they don't stand correctly, they can hurt their neck and back. People rarely think about how they sit, stand, walk, or move things. Think about your workplace. Is your job safe? What are the dangers you face every day? Is there anything that could hurt you over time? If there have been injuries at your workplace in the past, what were the causes? Task 3: Make a List of Safety MeasuresNow that you have identified dangers at work, think about how to solve these problems. At the Web site you visited, you read about solutions. You read about how to sit at a desk or how to lift something heavy without getting hurt. Now it's your turn to think about how ergonomics can help you. Think about the dangers you listed in Task 2. Do you need to practice standing or sitting in a certain way? Are there any exercises you can do that will help you? Where should you put objects that are dangerous? Do you need to change the way you hold or move an object?

Follow Up
Find a partner. Ask your partner to read the list of safety measures that you wrote in Task 3. Then see if your partner can answer the following questions: - What's the purpose of your directions? What dangers are you trying to get your audience to prevent?
Then ask your partner for general feedback. Are there any steps that you could make clearer? Is there any other information you need to include? Then take the time to rewrite your safety measures.
